Chapter 27 Votes Disassociation from Two National Resolutions

At our September 11, 2011 meeting, Chapter 27 voted to disassociate from two resolutions passed at VFP's National Convention in Portland, Oregon.

Resolution 2011-7 TO IMPEACH PRESIDENT OBAMA FOR WAR CRIMES.

This vote does not condone any of the violations stated in the resolution, nor does it violate the intent or spirit of the resolution. We condemn all of the stated violations, and we ask for an end to such activity by our government, regardless of who is in leadership.

We cannot accept calling for impeachment for two reasons.

  • The inconsistent use of the impeachment tool in our highly partisan and polarized political climate suggests it's use is problematic. The only current impeachment that has gone forward was pushed by one party in power over the issue of sexual infidelity, and we fear that participating in such, even if the issue were more noble and important, would serve to make us unwitting partners with one partisan effort over another. This is totally foreign to what we are about.

  • Calling for impeachment focuses us on something not central to our mission. It will prove a distraction. It is divisive among our members. Even at national convention, the vote on this was close, and it was divisive. Our mission is to end war, not to end the term of whoever happens to be in leadership at the time. Unfortunately, though there are policy differences, they all get co-opted by the power of the so-called military industrial complex.

Member Bob Heberle's Objection to our decision.

When the vote was taken at the chapter, none of those voting had participated in the national convention business meeting. I believe that our chapter's vote was taken hastily and without an opportunity for a fair rebuttal
